Meet Sarah

Sarah Cantu is a flutist, flute and piano teacher, and writer who loves working one-on-one to share the joy of music-making with her students. A Greenville, South Carolina native, Sarah has been playing the flute for over 15 years. She graduated from Bob Jones University, where she studied flute with Dr. Esther Waite, with a BMus in Flute Performance in 2020.

Since finishing her degree, Sarah has been teaching in the Greenville area. She also provides flute or piano music weekly at her church and offers flute music for weddings, receptions, and other events. When she's not teaching, Sarah enjoys reading in coffee shops with her husband, exploring the Upstate, staying active, and spending time in nature.

Flute

Sarah works with beginning to advanced flutists age 8 through adult (younger children may be considered but will likely need to purchase a special headjoint due to the size and length of the flute). She believes that an individualized approach incorporating music that the student enjoys is the best way to help each student thrive. She strives to make sure every lesson is fun, engaging, and challenging.

Sarah starts beginning students with the Blocki Flute Method. This award-winning method combines technique, fun new pieces, classical adaptations, and duets to help students start out with strong technique, learn to read music, and play in the flute's low and high registers quickly (and have fun during the process!). As the student learns the building blocks of flute playing, they can being to play other music that interests them.

For intermediate and advanced students, Sarah works with the student to choose etudes, technique books, classical repertoire, and other music the student wants to play based on the student's playing experience and goals. She believes it's important for students to understand the music that they play, so she incorporates basic music theory into lessons and encourages students to compose their own music. She also helps them prepare to take advantage of performance opportunities such as recitals, competitions, and auditions for bands or orchestras.

Piano

Sarah works with budding pianists of all ages, from five-year-olds who can barely reach the piano to retirees.

For beginning pianists, Sarah teaches from method books tailored to the student's age group to lay a strong musical foundation. With the method book and the help of additional resources based on the student's age, needs, and interests, the student will develop good technique and learn to read music with fun, enjoyable piano pieces and games.

Intermediate pianists will continue to learn the classical style with the Masterwork Classics series, but will also have the technical tools to play more of the music they are interested in, such as movie or video game scores, sacred music, and popular songs.
